DESCRIPTION |
FREESTYLE 45 minutes |
5:1 |
A competent, confident freestyle opens up a lifetime of aquatic fitness and recreational opportunities. While this foundational swim stroke is the fastest, at any speed it requires well-timed coordination of body rolls, rhythmic breathing and high-elbow arm pulls. We guide students through a series of drills that helps create a smooth, relaxed stroke. Includes an introduction to flip-turns. Great for triathlon racers. We offer separate workshops for kids and adults. |
BREASTSTROKE 45 minutes |
5:1 |
We recommend everyone learn breaststroke due to its versatility for competitive racing, recreation, open water and survival swimming. This symmetrical, forward-facing stroke requires properly alternating between a powerful whip kick, a sweeping circular arm motion, breathing and gliding. Students progress through drills that refine arm and leg propulsion and stroke timing, then are challenged to maintain form when swimming the full stroke. |
BACKSTROKE & BUTTERFLY 45 minutes |
5:1 |
Backstroke and butterfly complete the repertoire of the four competitive racing strokes, while allowing recreational swimmers another opportunity to relax, or even show off. Backstroke can be done in a laid-back or vigorous style; learning butterfly offers a rewarding feeling of power and grace. As with all strokes, proper body position, timing and practice are essential to create efficient, refined strokes. |
POOL SAFETY: Survival Swimming & Avoiding Accidents 45 minutes |
5:1 |
Even good swimmers can develop cramps or fatigue, get a mouth full of water, fall in, or get pushed. Being confident in one's safety skills, especially in deep water, can help avoid panic so that swimmers can extract themselves from a negative situation, and ask for help if necessary. We review survival skills, and drill students on how to link together treading, floating, rolling over to a back float and survival swimming to the edge. We discuss the dangers of risky pool behavior such as swimming near drains and breath holding games, and review diving safety. |
OPEN WATER SAFETY: Self Rescue, Survival Swimming & Avoiding Accidents 45 minutes |
5:1 |
An aquatic emergency can happen to anyone, even good swimmers. A swimmer can develop cramps or fatigue, a boat may capsize, or a car may go off road into a body of water. Many people in aquatic emergencies never intended to go into water. Knowing how to help yourself is imperative. We teach survival floating, treading and swimming, self-rescue for cold and warm bodies of water, how to get out of a riptide, and what to do if you're fully clothed and find yourself in water. |
DIVING 45 minutes |
5:1 |
Whether learning how to dive for fun or competition, it’s important to learn from a qualified instructor and adhere to safe diving principles. We teach deck-side diving safety, and guide students through a progression from sitting dive to a competitive dive. Students must enter the water with confidence and control at each step before advancing. This progressive approach helps overcome anxiety that some students may feel while learning headfirst water entry skills. |
RACING SKILLS 45 minutes |
5:1 |
Competitive swimming requires ongoing refinement of the four racing strokes, but also execution of tandem racing skills such as diving, open turns, flip-turns, underwater dolphin kick and underwater pull-outs. Refining these racing skills can help competitive swimmers drop time, fitness swimmers improve their workouts, or introduce racing to anyone curious about joining a competitive swim team. |
