Learn Water Safety + CPR and Water Related First Aid

Our Water Safety presentations teach participants how to prevent, recognize, and respond to emergencies in, on and around common aquatic environments. You and your caregiver, not a lifeguard, are a child's primary defense against water-related accidents. Participants will learn:

• Basic CPR and first aid responses for common occurrences in, on and around water.
• How to safely hold and/or support children of any age or ability in the water.
• Strategies beyond "Don't run!" that will help prevent aquatic accidents.
• How to spot warning signs of exhaustion, distressed swimmers and active drowning victims. HINT: nobody will be waving their arms and yelling, "Help!"
• How to safely respond to a distressed swimmer and an active drowning victim.
• How to choose a flotation device, and when and how to use it.
• Criteria for hiring a summer sitter who will be taking your children in/near water.
• Strategies for keeping everyone safe and having fun at a pool party.

Participants will learn basic CPR and water-related first aid from a certified CPR instructor, however students will not be certified to perform CPR to the general public.
This is NOT a swim class, or lifeguard certification class.

Drowning is a Leading Cause of Death in Children

• About 10 people per day die of unintentional drowning in the United States.
• 1 in 5 drownings are children 1-14, and ages 1-4 have the highest drowning rate.
• Drowning is the #1 accidental cause of death in the U.S. for children ages 1-4.
• For every child who dies, 5 more receive emergency care for non-fatal submersion, and may have permanent brain damage.
• Most drownings occur in home swimming pools belonging to family or friends of the victim.
